The Massachusetts Gaming Commission released its April 2026 revenue report on May 20, showing online and retail sportsbooks in the Commonwealth settled approximately $678.4 million in current and future wagers during the month, generating $81.77 million in taxable sports wagering revenue and $16.31 million in state tax.
The April figures continue Massachusetts' position as one of the most active sports-betting markets in the country, though they represent a seasonal dip from the March handle driven by the NFL Super Bowl and the start of March Madness. April typically reflects baseball ramp-up, NBA playoffs, and Stanley Cup playoff betting.
Online operators settled $670.66 million of the total; roughly 99% of statewide handle. The three Category 1 retail sportsbooks at Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield, and Plainridge Park Casino settled the remaining $7.72 million in person.
DraftKings Leads, FanDuel Second
DraftKings; headquartered in Boston; once again led Massachusetts in monthly handle with $335.1 million in wagers settled, representing roughly 50% of all online sports betting volume in the state. FanDuel followed at $167.7 million (25%), and BetMGM in third with $50.0 million (7.5%).
Fanatics Sportsbook continued its strong growth in the Massachusetts market, posting $70.8 million in handle for April; surpassing both BetMGM and Caesars to become the fourth-largest operator by volume. Caesars Sportsbook settled $24.0 million, theScore Bet $18.4 million, and Bally Bet $4.6 million.
Tax Collection and Hold
Massachusetts taxes Category 3 (online) operators at 20% of taxable sports wagering revenue and Category 1 (retail) operators at 15%. The combined April tax haul of $16.31 million flows to the General Fund (45%), the Workforce Investment Trust Fund (17.5%), the Gaming Local Aid Fund (27.5%), the Public Health Trust Fund (9%), and the Youth Development and Achievement Fund (1%).
The statewide hold percentage of 12.30% was modestly above the long-term industry average of roughly 9โ10%, suggesting favorable results for sportsbooks against bettors in April. Retail hold came in at 11.19%, while online hold reached 12.31%. DraftKings (13.12%) and FanDuel (13.40%) saw the strongest hold among major operators; Caesars Sportsbook held just 5.84%; the lowest of any MA online operator for the month and likely reflecting a tough month against parlays or live betting.
Cumulative Totals Since Launch
Since Massachusetts sports betting launched; retail on January 31, 2023, and online on March 10, 2023; the Commonwealth has now collected approximately $452.95 million in total sports wagering tax revenue. Combined with $2.415 billion in casino tax and assessment collections since the first MA casino opened, total gaming taxes to the state have surpassed $2.87 billion.
Casino Gaming Holds Steady
Casino gaming revenue across PPC, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor totaled approximately $100.21 million in gross gaming revenue for April, generating $28.83 million in tax. Encore Boston Harbor again led casino GGR at $60.0 million, with MGM Springfield at $24.5 million and Plainridge Park (slots-only) at $15.7 million.
The next monthly revenue report from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, covering May 2026, is expected in mid-June.
